Covestro: More durable solution for cable protection system in offshore industries

The growing market for offshore wind farms requires a sustainable value chain capable of delivering a robust and sustainable subsea infrastructure while reducing the environmental impact of the industry. To achieve this, the offshore industry is urgently looking for renewable materials that meet their high performance requirements in the supply chain.

Covestro and Tekmar Group have taken up this challenge and are working together to develop more sustainable subsea products by leveraging each other’s expertise in their respective fields.

Covestro Elastomers develops cast elastomer systems to provide solutions to the offshore energy market. Tekmar is a leading producer of polyurethane based cable protection systems for the global offshore energy markets.

A key part of the cable protection system is the bend limiter, which, along with the rest of the system, is designed to protect cables in the ocean for decades. So why not come up with an alternative polyurethane elastomer system for more durable casting of these products? One of the major challenges is to reconcile durability and technical performance, without compromising on quality. To solve this problem, Covestro has developed a new polyurethane elastomer system based on its CO2 The technology, now called Triturn®, which positively contributes to reducing the carbon footprint of products.

Covestro’s new curvature limiter system, which recently received the UTECH Europe Award 2021 in the CASE category (CASE stands for coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers), allows CO to be reused2 as a source of valuable material in polyol production and for reducing up to 20 percent of the fossil raw materials that are normally used for polyol. The new system also brings significant technical gains by being easier to process and by improving the non-aging properties of salt water. Tekmar uses the new PU system to manufacture product samples at its factory in North East England and is currently performing a series of product tests.

Marc Bell, Managing Director of Tekmar Energy, said: “Tekmar is committed to developing more sustainable solutions for the offshore energy markets. Working with Covestro allows us to explore alternative solutions that we can share with our customers to support their transition to cleaner energy and net zero emissions goals. ”

Through a long-term collaboration, Covestro and Tekmar are proactively shaping the underwater protection industry by introducing an alternative and more sustainable solution to move the offshore industry forward.
